University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonioمعرفی
Dr. Martin Schwacha is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Health San Antonio, where he directs a research laboratory focused on trauma immunology. His research examines the role of the innate immune system in host responses to traumatic injury, with particular emphasis on burn complications, immune dysfunction, sepsis, and multiple organ failure. He maintains active collaborations with the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) and has received funding from the Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health.
Schwacha's current research investigates post-burn immunoinflammatory processes using both experimental models and clinical studies. His work has significantly advanced understanding of myeloid-derived suppressor cells, T-cell exhaustion dynamics, gut microbiome alterations, and lung barrier dysfunction following trauma. Recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the relationship between traumatic injury, immune cell activation, and microbiome disturbances.
As Director of the Surgical Research Resident Program, Schwacha mentors surgical residents in research methodologies. His program provides trainees with opportunities in data analysis, laboratory research, and surgically oriented investigations, helping them develop critical analysis skills for clinical practice.
