Martin Schaefer

Martin Schaefer is the Spatial and Data Services Manager at the University of Portsmouth's Faculty of Science & Health, with a part-time lecturing role from 2006–2022. He holds a BSc in Geography from the University of Sheffield (1999) and an MSc in GIS from the University of Portsmouth (2001), alongside a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (2006). His expertise spans GIS, drone applications, surveying, and climate research in Arctic/Alpine environments and marine biology.

Research focuses include GIS service provision for researchers, drone-based hazard analysis post-Hurricane Maria in Dominica, and climate interactions in Finnish Lapland and Kilimanjaro. He leads commercial surveying projects using GPS, LiDAR, and 3D scanning, emphasizing error propagation and precision.
