Martin Sale

Associate Professor Martin Sale is a faculty member at the University of Queensland (UQ), serving as the Head of Physiotherapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences within the Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Behavioural Sciences. He holds an academic rank of Associate Professor and specializes in neuroplasticity research, particularly investigating how brain stimulation techniques like TMS and tDCS can enhance neural repair and recovery in neurological conditions such as stroke. His work explores the interplay between sleep, neuroplasticity, and cognitive performance.

Education: BSc (1994) and First Class Honours in Physiology (1995) from the University of Adelaide; Bachelor of Physiotherapy (University of South Australia); PhD in Neuroscience (University of Adelaide, 2009). Awards include Young Scientist of the Year (2007) and NHMRC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2011).

Research interests include neural oscillations, brain connectivity, and the application of brain stimulation to improve hazard perception and cognitive function. He has secured over $4M in funding from NHMRC and the US Department of Defense. His laboratory focuses on translating neuroscientific findings into clinical therapies for stroke and neurodegenerative diseases.

Teaching and mentoring: Leads undergraduate and graduate physiotherapy programs, coordinates clinical placements, and advocates for culturally diverse students. Supervised over 10 PhD/Masters students, with recent projects on sleep, plasticity, and brain stimulation applications.

Key projects include investigating slow-wave oscillations' role in mimicking sleep benefits and enhancing neuroplasticity, as well as using non-invasive brain stimulation to improve driving hazard perception and cognitive performance in sleep-deprived individuals.
