Martin Petitclerc is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM), where he directs the Center for the History of Social Regulations and serves as a researcher at the Interuniversity Center for Quebec Studies (CIEQ).
His research centers on the historical dynamics of social inequality, social movements, state formation, and capitalism in Quebec and Canada, with significant contributions to understanding poverty, marginalization, and institutional responses through scholarly works and digital exhibitions.
Dr. Petitclerc has earned major recognition for his publications:
- Institute of French American History Award for "We Protect Misfortune: The Popular Origins of the Social Economy in Quebec" (2007)
- Canadian Historical Association Award for "We Protect Misfortune: The Popular Origins of the Social Economy in Quebec" (2007)
- National Assembly of Quebec's Award for Best Political History Book of the Year for "Strike and Peace: History of Special Laws in Quebec" (2018)
He recently directed the comprehensive cyberexhibition "Outsmarting Fate," which analyzes Quebec's institutional approaches to poverty from the 19th century to the 1930s, covering themes including crime, delinquency, childhood, disease, madness, old age, and unemployment within Quebec's architectural and social history.
