Martin Nerlinger

Martin Nerlinger is Assistant Professor at the University of St. Gallen (HSG), affiliated with the SBF-HSG office in St. Gallen, Switzerland. His core responsibilities include research and teaching in sustainable and climate finance, asset pricing and risk management.

Research Interests

• Sustainable Finance – integrating environmental, social and governance factors into financial decision-making
• Climate Finance – measuring and pricing climate-related risks and opportunities
• Asset Pricing – valuation models that incorporate sustainability and carbon risk
• Risk Management – frameworks for managing carbon, liquidity and transition risks

His work often combines capital-market data with forward-looking sustainability metrics to assess firm value, portfolio performance and systemic risk.

Recent Publication Trends

Across 2020-2025, Nerlinger’s scholarship has concentrated on three converging streams: (1) empirical studies linking carbon risk and ESG factors to equity returns and firm valuation during exogenous shocks such as COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict; (2) development of new rating tools such as the Sustainable Value Creation Framework and Carbon Risk Management (CARIMA) handbook; and (3) governance research examining how boards and institutional investors integrate sustainability into strategy and voting behavior.
