Prof. Dr. Martin Löhnig is a Professor of Civil Law, German and European Legal History at the University of Regensburg's Faculty of Law. He has held this W3 professorship since the winter semester of 2008/2009, after previously holding a chair at the University of Konstanz. Löhnig is also the scientific director of the Institute for Eastern European Law (IOR) since 2022 and has served in significant administrative roles including as Dean of the Faculty of Law from 2019 to 2021.

He leads several major research projects including the DFG Graduate College 2337 "Metropolität in der Vormoderne" and the DFG project on the legal history of Alsace-Lorraine.
His scholarly output demonstrates significant trends across legal history, with particular emphasis on the evolution of civil law institutions, comparative legal development in Central Europe, and the historical foundations of contemporary family and inheritance law. His recent work shows increasing focus on transnational legal history and the interconnected development of legal systems across national boundaries.

Professor Löhnig has supervised numerous doctoral students and has been instrumental in establishing research networks across Europe. He has established the REGINA coaching center during his tenure as Dean of Studies, which was recognized by the "Deutschland - Land der Ideen" foundation.
He maintains an active presence in multiple research laboratories and networks, particularly the "Juristisches Laboratorium Mitteleuropa: Re-Thinking Central-European Legal Culture," which he has coordinated since 2018. This international research consortium brings together scholars from across Central Europe to examine the shared legal heritage of the region.
