Natali Stegmann is an Adjunct Professor (apl. Prof. Dr.) specializing in Modern History of East Central Europe at the University of Regensburg, affiliated with the Institute of History within the Faculty of Philosophy, Arts, History and Social Sciences. She serves as Academic Coordinator of the Elite Graduate Program in East European Studies, a joint initiative with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Her academic journey includes a Magister Artium (1994) from University of Frankfurt, a PhD (1999) and Habilitation (2007) from University of Tübingen, and postdoctoral positions at Frankfurt, TU Berlin, and Tübingen before joining Regensburg in 2009.
Her research focuses on 19th-20th century East Central Europe (particularly Poland and Czechoslovakia), with emphasis on:
- Gender and cultural history
- Social/labor policy and international organizations (especially ILO)
- Late socialism (1960s-1980s)
- War memory and veteran policies
- Transnational intellectual networks
Her publications exhibit strong thematic coherence, with recent works analyzing the interplay between war, welfare states, and international governance in interwar Eastern Europe. She frequently examines Poland/Czechoslovakia through lenses of policy transfer, expert networks, and the legacy of the Habsburg Empire. Gender perspectives inform her studies of dissent, labor, and scientific pioneers like Marie Curie.
Stegmann has secured significant research funding, including DFG-supported projects on Czechoslovak state-building (2004-2006) and Fritz Thyssen Foundation grants for conferences on war veterans (2010) and citizenship rights (2012). She coordinates interdisciplinary colloquia on Southeast European history and supervises graduate research.
She maintains active memberships in the Association for Women in Slavic Studies (AWSS), Verband der Osteuropahistoriker, and Czechoslovak Studies Association.
