Martin Lefebvre is a Professor and Chair of the School of Cinema at Concordia University, where he holds the Honorary University Research Chair in Film Studies. His work bridges semiotics, philosophy, and film theory, focusing on areas such as classical and contemporary film theories, modern/postmodern cinema, and cultural studies. He has expertise in analyzing filmmakers like Hitchcock, Eisenstein, Truffaut, and Godard, as well as the French New Wave.
Education:
- PhD from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM)
Lefebvre's research spans general and applied semiotics, with a strong emphasis on pragmatism (Peirce), philosophy of language (Wittgenstein), and aesthetics. His film studies expertise includes narrative theory, landscape in cinema, and cinéma québécois. He has also taught at the University of Alberta, Université Laval, and served as an Adjunct Professor at Université du Québec à Montréal.

Lefebvre founded and directed the Advanced Research Team on the History and Epistemology of Moving Image Studies (ARTHEMIS). He is currently preparing a book on Peirce, Pragmatism, and Images, as well as a collection on special effects.
