Martin L Olsson is a Professor and Consultant at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University. He serves as Research Team Manager in Transfusion Medicine and Principal Investigator for the national StemTherapy initiative on stem cells for regenerative therapy.
- Current research focuses on blood group discovery, host-pathogen interactions, and red blood cell roles in hemostasis
- Over 80% of human cells are red blood cells, with critical transfusion medicine implications
His group has established six new blood group systems (GLOB, VEL, FORS, SID, MAM, CD36) and elucidated molecular bases for antigens like PX2 and ExtB. Current work includes orphan blood groups (~30 unexplained), erythroid regulatory proteins (SMIM1, EMP3), and microbial interactions (HIV, malaria, E.coli).
