Martin Kittel is a Researcher and postdoctoral fellow at DIW Berlin’s Energy, Transportation, and Environment Department. His research focuses on energy system decarbonization, emphasizing flexibility in electricity systems, sector coupling, hydrogen applications, and addressing challenges of integrating variable renewable energy (e.g., Dunkelflauten phenomena). He is nearing completion of his PhD at Technical University Berlin and holds degrees from Dresden and Teesside University (UK). Prior to DIW, he worked on energy transition policy at Germanwatch and TU Berlin’s economic infrastructure group.
His research interests include energy economics, climate policy design, and high-resolution power system modeling. Key areas of exploration involve extreme renewable energy deficit events, storage solutions, and policy frameworks to enhance grid resilience. Kittel has contributed to projects like the DIW Bridge Project ‘SichER’, analyzing capacity mechanisms and demand-side flexibility.
His recent work highlights the need for robust methods to quantify renewable energy droughts and evaluates policy measures to ensure energy security during such events. Findings emphasize cross-sector hydrogen integration and adaptive market designs as critical strategies.
