Wolf-Peter Schill heads the research department 'Transformation of the Energy Sector' within the Energy, Transport, and Environment Department at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). His work focuses on the transition of energy systems toward renewable sources, with particular expertise in energy storage, electromobility, green hydrogen, and sector coupling. Schill employs open-source electricity sector modeling as his primary methodological approach and contributes to numerous research projects funded by federal ministries and the European Commission.
His research interests span energy economics, renewable energy integration, electricity market design, and climate policy. Schill's work addresses critical challenges in energy transition planning, grid stability with high renewable shares, and the economic implications of decarbonization strategies. His research combines technical modeling with economic analysis to provide policy-relevant insights for the energy transition.
His publications in leading journals including Nature Energy, Joule, and European Economic Review demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of his work, bridging engineering, economics, and policy analysis. Recent research focuses on vehicle-to-grid integration, renewable energy droughts (Dunkelflaute), energy storage economics, and the acceleration of Germany's energy transition.
Schill actively contributes to the energy policy discourse through his role as co-developer of the Open Energy Tracker platform and as host of the 'Fossilfrei' podcast. He is also an active member of the academy project Energy Systems of the Future (ESYS), where he collaborates with other experts to shape evidence-based energy policy.
His work demonstrates a strong emphasis on practical, policy-relevant research that addresses the real-world challenges of energy system transformation, with particular attention to market design, system flexibility, and the integration of variable renewable energy sources into existing infrastructure.
