Dr. Martin Kagel is the Associate Provost for Global Engagement at the University of Georgia (UGA) and holds the A.G. Steer Professorship in Goethe Studies. He previously served as Associate Dean for Humanities and International Studies in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences (2016–2021) and as Head of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies (2006–2016). His work focuses on international education, transnational European studies, and Germanic scholarship.
- Ph.D. in German from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
- Master’s degree in German and Theatre Studies from the Free University of Berlin
Research interests include study abroad program development, transnational academic partnerships, and European cultural studies. He has co-developed a dual-degree program in German and engineering, student/faculty exchange programs with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and annual faculty seminars in Berlin.
He has authored or co-authored over 60 scholarly works, including six books and three book-length journal issues. His teaching accolades include the Sandy Beaver Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Richard B. Russell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.
Current responsibilities include oversight of UGA’s study abroad initiatives, international centers, immigration services, and global partnerships.
