Martin Howard

Martin Howard is a Professor and Head of the Department of French at University College Cork. As Vice-Head (Global) in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, he researches second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and study abroad programs.

His work examines how learning contexts impact language proficiency development, particularly in French. Research interests include sociolinguistic competence acquisition during study abroad experiences.

Publications include edited volumes on language acquisition during international mobility. Dr. Howard coordinates European research networks on study abroad pedagogy.

Educational background includes a Ph.D. from Université de Nancy II and extensive work on Canadian French linguistics.
