Julia Gorham is a Lecturer at the Australian National University (ANU), affiliated with the School of Literature, Languages & Linguistics. She holds a Ph.D. in French with a specialization in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2025), an M.A. in French Linguistics and Teacher Education from the University of Arizona (2020), and dual B.A./B.S. degrees in Francophone Studies and Chemistry from the University of South Dakota (2018).
Her research focuses on applied linguistics, second language pedagogy, and social justice in education. Key interests include curriculum development, critical pedagogy, AI integration in language teaching, and intercultural competence. She currently leads a mixed-methods study on critical pedagogy in second language classrooms.
Gorham teaches undergraduate French courses such as Introductory French Studies II and Continuing French II at ANU. She has extensive experience in study abroad programs, including leading faculty-led trips to France. Her work has been published in journals like Foreign Language Annals, Frontiers, and Second Language Research and Practice.
Her teaching philosophy prioritizes student engagement and practical application, with a focus on bridging linguistic theory and classroom practice. Collaborations include projects on video-based reflection tools and generational dynamics in language learning.
