معرفی
Martin Fussenegger is a Full Professor at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich in Basel and holds a joint appointment at the University of Basel. His work centers on mammalian cell engineering, synthetic gene circuits, and theranostic designer cell implants that interface with host metabolism to treat metabolic disorders.
Education:
- Graduated with Werner Arber at the Biocenter of the University of Basel (1992)
- Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology (1994) at the Max Planck Institute of Biology, Tübingen
- Postdoctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute of Infection Biology, Berlin (1995)
Research Areas:
Martin Fussenegger’s research explores the design of synthetic gene circuits that enable precise control of cellular functions, the development of theranostic cell implants for metabolic disorders, and the engineering of mammalian cells to interface with host physiology. His work bridges biotechnology, bioengineering, and molecular biology.
Scientific Awards:
- Gaden Award
- Merck Cell Culture Engineering Award
- Medal of the European Society for Animal Cell Technology (ESACT)
- Gutenberg Chair Excellence Award
- European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant Award (twice)
- James E. Bailey Award
Expert Panels and Memberships:
He serves as an expert for the Swiss Innovation Agency (Innosuisse), the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products (Swissmedic), and the Global Forum on Technology (GFTech) of the OECD. He is a member of prestigious academies including the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW), the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech), the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the Academia Europaea (AE), and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE).
