معرفی
Dr Martin Fletcher is a Senior Research Fellow at Leeds Beckett University, affiliated with the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing and the Leeds Sustainability Institute. His research focuses on evaluating occupied buildings, with emphasis on energy use, thermal comfort, and occupant behavior. He has led multiple national and international projects on building performance, particularly in domestic retrofit contexts.
His educational background includes an MSc in Renewable Energy from Newcastle University. He previously worked at Bournemouth University's Centre for the Green Knowledge Economy before joining Leeds Beckett in 2012.
- Research Interests:
- Building performance evaluation
- Domestic retrofit (fabric and system upgrades)
- Thermal comfort across diverse environments (homes, workplaces, sports facilities)
- Occupant behavior and energy use
- IoT integration in building systems
- Influence of retrofit on long-term energy demand modeling
His research has directly impacted UK energy policy, including a pilot study that influenced regional Net-Zero strategies and unlocked over £25 million in technology investment. He led the £3 million Demonstration of Energy Efficiency Potential (DEEP) project, one of the largest UK studies on solid-wall home retrofits.
From 2019–2020, he was seconded as a technical specialist to the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, where he advised on policy and developed research tenders. He currently teaches on the EngD, MSc Architectural Technology & Design, MSc Architectural Technology, BSc Building Services Engineering, and BSc Building Surveying programs.
- Scientific Contributions and Recognition:
- Significant policy impact through retrofit evaluation research
- Leadership in government-funded energy research
- Expert advisor to national policymakers
He supervises research projects and contributes to the Leeds Sustainability Institute. His work combines quantitative monitoring with qualitative methods (surveys, interviews) to deliver comprehensive insights into real-world building performance.
