Professor Martin Evans is a leading academic in geomorphology and environmental science at the University of Manchester, serving as Vice Dean and Head of the School of Environment, Education and Development. He holds a BA from the University of Oxford, an MSc, and a PhD from the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on peatland restoration, carbon cycling, and geomorphological processes, with emphasis on flood management and ecosystem services. Evans has supervised over 18 PhD students and led major projects like PROTECT-NFM and the NERC-funded peatland microbiology initiative.
His academic roles include Chair of the Conference of Heads of Geography in Higher Education and editor of Geography Review. Notable contributions include books on peatland geomorphology and the forthcoming Geomorphology and the Carbon Cycle. Awards include the Bezos Earth Fund GHG Removal Prize and Fellowship in the British Society for Geomorphology.
Recent research highlights include studies on gully erosion in India, cobblestone dams for flood management, and Sphagnum moss resilience to drought. Evans' work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action and sustainable land management.
