Dr. Emma Shuttleworth is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at the University of Manchester, specializing in peatland science, geomorphology, and natural flood management. She leads research on peatland restoration's role in climate resilience and flood risk reduction, with a focus on degraded UK peatlands. Her work integrates hydrological processes, sediment dynamics, and ecosystem services.
- University: University of Manchester
- Department: Geography
- Academic Rank: Senior Lecturer
Education includes a PhD in Peatland Geomorphology (University of Manchester), MSc in Environment and Climate Change (University of Liverpool), and BSc in Geography (University of Liverpool). She has held roles from Research Associate (2014–2019) to Lecturer (2019–2023) before her current Senior Lecturer position.
Research interests emphasize landscape restoration, contaminated sediment dynamics, and science communication. She leads projects funded by Natural England, Innovate UK, and NERC, focusing on peatland restoration’s impacts on carbon storage, flood mitigation, and water quality. Recent projects include Holcombe Moor Peatland Restoration (2023–2025) and Wigan Greenheart Greenhouse Gas Measurement (2023–2024).
Dr. Shuttleworth supervises PhD students exploring topics like gully erosion in India, peatland carbon balance, and flood management. She collaborates internationally and is active in professional bodies like the British Society for Geomorphology and European Geosciences Union.
