Evans' groundbreaking research focuses on experimental mammalian genetics, having isolated the first embryonic stem cells from normal mouse embryos in 1981. His work enables gene knockout technology, functional genomics, and animal models of human diseases. Recent applications include gene therapy for cystic fibrosis and BRCA2 breast cancer research.
As a Nobel laureate (2007) and recipient of the Albert Lasker Award (2001), he has received numerous honors including the Copley Medal (2009) and multiple honorary doctorates. His scientific achievements also include the Walter Cottman Fellowship and William Bate Hardy Prizes (both 1993).
