Martin E. Schwab is a Senior Professor at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Zurich. Previously, he served as full Professor of Neuroscience at ETH Zurich from 1997 to 2012. His groundbreaking research focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms of nerve fiber growth, particularly in regeneration after spinal cord and brain injuries. Dr. Schwab discovered Nogo-A, a key inhibitory protein in CNS regeneration, and developed antibody treatments that have entered Phase 2 clinical trials for spinal cord injury patients.
His research utilizes molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroanatomy, and behavioral analysis to investigate structural plasticity in the adult central nervous system. Current work explores how blocking inhibitory factors like Nogo-A enables functional recovery through new nerve fiber connections.
