Martin C. Tynan, M.D., is a trauma specialist in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine. He specializes in skeletal trauma, non-unions, mal-unions, and periprosthetic fractures, with a strong clinical focus on the physiologic effects of residual bone deformity and joint injury.
His research interests center on orthopaedic disorders of the growing skeleton, particularly the role of orthopaedic surgery in the long-term management of patients with neuromuscular disorders, brain injuries, and myelodysplastic conditions. Current projects include studying the effects of marginal impaction in acetabular fractures, correlating muscle stretch with pO2 in the orthopaedic research lab, and preparing a paper on femoral fractures in children treated with external fixators.
Dr. Tynan received his medical degree from Trinity College, Dublin, completed orthopaedic training at the University of Liverpool, and pursued advanced fellowships in pediatric orthopaedics and rehabilitation at Rancho Los Amigos and UCI Medical Center, general pediatric orthopaedics and trauma at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospital, and adult orthopaedic trauma at Washington University in St. Louis. He is board certified by FRCSI and FRCSEd (Ortho) and is a U.S. Army veteran with deployments to multiple military medical centers including Heidelberg, Hawaii, Texas, and Colorado.
He contributes to medical education through involvement in residency programs and surgical training at UCI. While no formal awards or publications are listed, his multidisciplinary clinical and research work demonstrates a deep commitment to advancing trauma and pediatric orthopaedic care.
