Prof. Martin Brueckner is the Pro Vice Chancellor for Sustainability at Murdoch University, where he also holds roles as Research Principal at the Indo-Pacific Research Centre and a member of the Centre for Water, Energy and Waste under the Harry Butler Institute. His research focuses on sustainable development, corporate social responsibility, social licence, and the political economy of environmental policy. He has extensively studied the intersections between extractive industries, climate resilience, and community well-being, particularly in Western Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Brueckner’s work critiques the sustainability of resource-driven economic models and advocates for equitable social protection frameworks in climate adaptation. He has published widely on topics such as mining legacies, disaster risk reduction, and the governance challenges of achieving just development. His recent scholarship emphasizes integrating climate adaptation into social policy and questioning the legitimacy of corporate social licences in extractive projects.
His publications highlight systemic issues in environmental governance, including the failure of impact assessments and the need for transdisciplinary approaches to sustainability. He actively engages with policymakers and communities to address the resource curse, promote sustainable practices, and enhance social equity in development projects.
