Martin Auer is a Senior Scientist at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Innsbruck, specializing in the Research Department Aguntum. He has served as excavation leader at the Roman site of Aguntum since 2020, following Michael Tschurtschenthaler's retirement after 29 years of leadership.
Educational Background:
- Completed his dissertation in Classical and Provincial Roman Archaeology in 2015 with the topic: 'Ceramic Regions as Spaces of Interaction: A West Noric Perspective'

Auer's research focuses on Theory and Practice of Archaeological Fieldwork, Material Culture Studies and Archaeometry, and Roman and Late Antique Ceramics in Noricum, examining production and consumption patterns. His fieldwork spans Aguntum and Lavant, with special attention to ceramic production. He plays a key role in the Archaeological Summer School in Aguntum, providing practical training for students of ancient studies.
His recent publications demonstrate deep engagement with Aguntum's urban development, particularly the forum area and city wall dating. His work has significantly advanced understanding of chronology and function of Roman buildings in this Noric settlement, including the unique discovery of rock crystal trade evidence in quantities not previously documented elsewhere in the Roman Empire.

His current excavations focus on the Forum of Aguntum and 'Prunkbau' administrative building, with significant follow-up work in the Craftsmen's Quarter and thermal baths areas.
