University of North Carolina at Chapel Hillمعرفی
Martin Andreas Styner is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science with a joint appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). He serves as Co-Director of the UNC Neuro Image Research and Analysis Laboratory (NIRAL) and Associate Director of the Developmental Neuroimaging Core within the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities, while also acting as UNC Principal Investigator for the NIH Roadmap Initiative's National Alliance for Medical Image Computing.
Dr. Styner earned his Ph.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2001 and Master's degree from ETH Zurich in 1997. His academic trajectory began as a graduate researcher at ETH Zurich (1994), followed by project leadership at Duke Image Analysis Laboratory (2001-2002), and founding/leading a medical image analysis group at University of Bern's M.E. Müller Research Center (2002-2004) prior to joining UNC faculty in 2004.
His research specializes in anatomical structure and tissue segmentation, morphometry through shape analysis, modeling and atlas building, diffusion tensor image analysis, and intra/inter-modality registration. Current work focuses on structural and connectivity-based brain analysis in developing brains across humans, primates, and rodents, producing over 60 peer-reviewed journal publications and 80 conference papers. This interdisciplinary work bridges computer science, medicine, and neuroscience with emphasis on developmental disorders.
Dr. Styner maintains active leadership in national/international projects through collaborations with medical, engineering, and industry researchers. He serves on the editorial board of Medical Image Analysis, the premier journal in his field, and directs grant-funded initiatives centered on neuroimaging innovation.
He co-leads the Neuro Image Research and Analysis Laboratories (NIRAL) and Developmental Neuroimaging Laboratory, driving methodological advances in image analysis for developmental disability research through cross-departmental teams in Computer Science and Psychiatry.
