Martha Silva is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of International Health and Sustainable Development at Tulane University's School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine. She serves as Director of the Master of Public Health Program and is affiliated with the Stone Center for Latin American Studies. Her research focuses on reproductive justice, social behavior change, and family planning systems in low-resource settings.
Dr. Silva holds a PhD in International Health and Development (Tulane, 2005), an MPH in Health Information Systems (Tulane, 2002), and a BA in Psychology and French from Macalester College (1998). She has extensive international experience across Latin America, Africa, and the Pacific.
Her research explores reproductive health policy, gender-based violence prevention, and community-based health interventions. Current projects examine abortion legislation in Louisiana and social behavior change programs in West Africa. Recent publications demonstrate methodological innovation in social listening techniques and mixed-methods evaluation of health systems.
She has secured significant research funding including a $1.2M USAID grant for Zika response research and a $615k award from Population Council for family planning research. Current grants include Tulane-funded projects on reproductive justice frameworks in Louisiana and Mexico.
Dr. Silva collaborates with global health initiatives including Breakthrough ACTION and serves on research teams evaluating community capacity strengthening programs in Nigeria, Niger, and Côte d'Ivoire. Her work emphasizes participatory approaches and interdisciplinary partnerships.
