Martha Patterson, Ph.D., is a Professor of English and Coordinator of Prestigious Fellowships & Scholarships at McKendree University. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Iowa (1996), an M.A. in Literary Studies (1990), and a B.A. in English from Carleton College (1988). Her research focuses on African American Studies, Women’s Studies, American Modernism, and Periodical Studies. Notably, she has contributed to the Cambridge Companion to Harlem Renaissance Literature and led revisions of The New Negro: A History with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
Her scholarly achievements include the Fulbright Research/Teaching Award to Norway (2010–2011), multiple NEH grants, and the 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award. She has held administrative roles such as Chair of McKendree’s Publication and Intellectual Engagement Committee and Faculty Sponsor of Sigma Tau Delta.
Her work bridges literary analysis with cultural history, examining themes like the New Negro movement, gender representation in political discourse, and archival inequities in digital scholarship. She has presented globally at conferences like the American Studies Association and the University of Agder in Norway. Her current projects include a monograph on Harlem Renaissance periodicals and a reimagined edition of foundational texts in African American intellectual history.
