Marta Vicarelli

Marta Vicarelli is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with a joint appointment in the School of Public Policy and the Department of Economics. Her research focuses on climate change impacts, socio-economic resilience, Nature-based Solutions, and renewable energy policy. She holds a Ph.D. in Sustainable Development from Columbia University, alongside degrees in Environmental Economics and Earth Sciences from École Polytechnique and École Normale Supérieure in Paris.

She has led projects funded by NSF, the European Union, and UMass, focusing on coastal resilience, Blue Economy recovery, and equity in climate policy.

Her awards include the 2021 PEDRR Champion Award and the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize (as an IPCC contributing author). She co-founded the United Nations Global Sustainable Solutions Winter School, fostering international collaboration on climate challenges.

Her grants span $2M+ in funding, addressing topics like transportation infrastructure resilience, post-pandemic coastal recovery, and Nature-based Solutions in global contexts. She advises numerous students and collaborates with institutions worldwide on climate policy and equity.

She is affiliated with the UMass Northeast Center for Coastal Resilience and the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), emphasizing actionable research for global sustainability.
