Marta Reynal-Querol is an ICREA Research Professor at the Department of Economics and Business at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and a Research Professor at the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE). She directs the Institute for Political Economy and Governance (IPEG) and the Master in Economics program at UPF. Holding a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and a Master’s from UPF, her research focuses on civil wars, conflict resolution, aid effectiveness, and institutional economics. She has received prestigious grants including three ERC grants (Advanced 2022, Consolidator 2014, Starting 2007) and awards like the Premi Jaume I Economia 2022 and the Banco Herrero Prize 2011. Her work bridges theoretical models with empirical analysis, addressing topics such as state capacity, ethnic polarization, and the economic impacts of conflict. She serves on editorial boards of journals like Journal of Conflict Resolution and holds fellowships at CEPR, CESifo, and EUDN. Her research also explores the long-term effects of historical institutions, colonial legacies, and the socioeconomic consequences of crises like the pandemic.
Her academic contributions span over 50 publications, including seminal papers on civil war causes and aid effectiveness. Key themes include measuring inequality in real-time, the impact of colonialism on development, and gender disparities in credit markets. She has advised international organizations and policy bodies, leveraging her expertise in conflict economics and development policy.
