Dr. Carrie Manning is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. She specializes in Comparative Politics, Post-Conflict Politics, Peacebuilding, and African Politics. Her work focuses on democratization processes in post-civil war contexts, particularly in Mozambique, Bosnia, El Salvador, and other African nations.
Dr. Manning holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley (1997), an MPA from Princeton University (1991), and a BA from Wesleyan University (1986). She has extensive field experience, including serving as Country Director for the National Democratic Institute in Angola (1997-98) and conducting seminars on civil-military relations across Africa.
Her research emphasizes electoral inclusion, post-rebel party dynamics, and the role of international aid in post-conflict states. Notable publications include Costly Democracy: Building Democracy after Civil War (2013), The Making of Democrats (2008), and The Politics of Peace in Mozambique (2002). Her recent work explores taxation dynamics and social contracts in democratic contexts.
Dr. Manning’s research has examined the impact of elections on former armed groups, the effectiveness of bilateral vs. multilateral peacebuilding strategies, and the challenges of stabilizing party systems in post-war societies. She has advised on peace processes and governance reforms in multiple African countries.
