Marta Reuter is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University, specializing in civil society, governance, and transnationalization processes. She is affiliated with both the Stockholm Center for Civil Society Studies (SCCSS) at the Stockholm School of Economics and the Stockholm Centre for Organizational Research (Score).
Her research sits at the intersection of Political Sociology, Organization Studies, and Public Administration, focusing on civil society organizations (CSOs) as political actors. Reuter examines how CSOs participate in governance structures both within society and in their own internal organizational frameworks, analyzes CSOs as both agents and subjects of transnationalization, and investigates the complex relationships between civil society and the state from comparative perspectives.
Her publication portfolio reveals consistent scholarly engagement with civil society governance across multiple contexts. Recent work explores think tanks as emerging organizational actors in Swedish civil society, the Church of Sweden's adaptation strategies, temporal dimensions of transnational processes, and organizational identity formation among think tank professionals. Her research demonstrates an evolving focus from traditional governance structures toward more nuanced examinations of organizational identity, adaptation mechanisms, and digital transformations within civil society.
Reuter has secured significant research funding including grants from the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation (2015), Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (2014, 2009), and the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society (2014). She serves as co-convenor of the Standing Group on Civil Society at EGOS (2019-2022), member of the senior editorial board for Nonprofit Policy Forum, reviewer for Voluntas journal, and co-convenor of the research seminar on organized civil society at SCCSS.
As an active academic contributor, Reuter frequently lectures in executive education programs for civil society and public sector leaders, bridging theoretical research with practical governance challenges. Her work connects organizational theory with real-world civil society dynamics, particularly examining how Swedish civil society organizations navigate changing political landscapes and transnational pressures.
