Marta Maria Gaglia is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, affiliated with the Institute for Molecular Virology and the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology. She leads research on virus-cell interactions, focusing on influenza A virus (RNA virus) and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV/DNA virus).
- Trainer in UW-Madison's MDTP and CMB graduate programs
- Former faculty at Tufts University School of Medicine (2014-2022)
Research interests center on how viruses manipulate host pathways to subvert innate immune responses. Her work explores the dualistic role of innate immunity in viral infections—both as a barrier and a potential source of tissue damage. Key areas include viral protein function, immune response modulation, and disease outcomes.
Scientific recognition includes the Ann Palmenberg Junior Faculty Award (2019). Her lab has contributed software tools like PyDegradome v2.0 for RNA fragment analysis and single-cell RNA sequencing protocols for KSHV studies.
- Advisees include 23 trainees (PhD, MSc, undergraduates) across her career
- Current team includes postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate interns studying influenza and KSHV
Grants include R01 funding. Collaborations span institutions like Dalhousie University and Harvard University. The lab relocated from Tufts University to UW-Madison in 2022.
