Marta Kersten is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Concordia University, where she also heads the Applied Perception Lab. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from McGill University with a dissertation titled "Augmented reality visualization in neurovascular surgery," and previous work as a postdoctoral fellow at the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, Montreal Neurological Institute.
Her research focuses on the intersection of computer science and medical applications, with particular expertise in:
- Augmented Reality for surgical applications
- Medical visualization techniques
- Neurovascular surgery support systems
- Computer Aided Orthopedic Surgery (CAOS)
- Medical image registration
- Perception systems in medical contexts
Dr. Kersten has a unique interdisciplinary background that combines technical expertise with interests in art history. She completed a BA Minor in Art History while studying Computer Science at Queen's University and has expressed interest in potential applications of computer technology in art conservation. Her research trajectory demonstrates a consistent focus on applying computer science to solve complex problems in medical settings, particularly in surgical visualization and assistance.
She previously held research positions at the GRIS (Wilhelm Schickard Institut für Informatik) at the University of Tübingen, Germany, and conducted her Master's research at the Medical Computing Laboratory at Queen's University in collaboration with Kingston General Hospital and the Human Mobility Research Centre.
