Marta Ameri is an Associate Professor of Art History at Colby College, specializing in ancient and medieval art with a particular focus on Islamic art, South Asian archaeology, and Near Eastern archaeology. She received her Ph.D. in Art History and Archaeology from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University in 2010, with a dissertation titled 'Sealing at the Edge of the Middle Asian Interaction Sphere: The View from Gilund, Rajasthan, India.'
Her research centers on seals and sealing technology in the ancient world, particularly within the context of the Indus Valley Civilization. Dr. Ameri has published extensively on seal iconography, administrative practices, and gender roles in ancient societies. She has co-edited the significant volume 'Seals and Sealing in the Ancient World: Case Studies from the Near East, Egypt, the Aegean, and South Asia' (Cambridge University Press, 2018), which represents a major contribution to comparative glyptic studies.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on interdisciplinary approaches to ancient seals, with particular attention to gender dynamics in ancient administration, as evidenced by her groundbreaking work identifying female administrators at Shahr-i Sokhta. Her scholarship demonstrates a methodological sophistication that combines art historical analysis with archaeological interpretation to reconstruct ancient cultural systems.
