Marnie S. Anderson is the Barbara Richmond ’40 Professor in the Social Sciences and Professor of History at Smith College. Her research focuses on the social and political history of modern Japan, with a particular emphasis on gender history. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Michigan and an A.B. from Smith College.
Her work examines topics such as gender roles in Meiji Japan, activist networks in Japanese modernity, and conservative women’s activism in prewar Japan. Notable publications include In Close Association (2022) and A Place in Public (2011). She teaches courses on Japanese history, East Asian studies, and gender studies.
Her current research investigates the rise of large-scale conservative women’s activism in prewar and wartime Japan, focusing on the Patriotic Women’s Association. She has been featured in podcasts like The Meiji at 150 Podcast (2018) and contributes to academic journals such as Japanese Studies and Journal of Women’s History.
