Marnie Anderson is Barbara Richmond Professor in Social Sciences and Professor of History at Smith College, specializing in modern Japanese history with emphasis on gender and social history. Her research examines women's roles in Japanese modernization and activist networks.
Recent book 'In Close Association' (2022) analyzes local activism in Meiji Japan. Other works explore women's status transitions and queer historical methodologies. Receiving multiple fellowships including from Radcliffe Institute and Duke University.
Teaches Japanese history surveys, women/gender in Japan, and social protest courses. Education includes PhD from University of Michigan and AB from Smith College.
