Lionel Babicz is a Lecturer in Japanese and Asian Studies at the University of Sydney, affiliated with The Vere Gordon Childe Centre. He holds a PhD from the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO) in Paris and a degree in Islamic World History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on Japanese-Korean relations, Meiji intellectual history, and Big History.
Teaching roles include courses such as Japanese 1, Asia: Past, Present, Future, and Modern Japan. Current research projects explore postwar Japanese historiography of colonial Korea and Big History of Asia.
He is associated with the Japan Center at L'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris and the Big History Institute at Macquarie University. Babicz has published extensively on Meiji constitutionalism, colonialism, and historical reconciliation, including books like Le Japon face à la Corée à l'époque Meiji (2002) and co-edited works on shared historical awareness in East Asia.
