Markus Stoffel is a Full Professor at the Institute for Environmental Sciences, University of Geneva, holding the Chair for Climate Impacts & Risks in the Anthropocene (C-CIA). He directs the Swiss Tree-Ring Lab and serves as faculty in the F-A Forel Department for Aquatic and Environmental Sciences. With an academic career spanning institutions like the University of Bern and University of Fribourg, his work bridges climate science, geomorphology, and ecological modeling.
- Education: BSc/MSc in Physical Geography, University of Fribourg; PhD in Physical Geography, University of Fribourg; Habilitation, University of Bern.
Stoffel's research focuses on hydrogeomorphic processes in mountain environments, including dendroecology and climate-cryosphere linkages. He has pioneered methods for reconstructing glacial lake outburst floods, debris flows, and rockfalls using tree rings. His recent publications analyze volcanic climate forcing and ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction.
His editorial leadership includes co-Editor-in-Chief of Geomorphology (Elsevier) and Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Global Change Research (Springer). Scientific accolades include the 2018 CHOICE Award, 2016 José Boninsegna Frontiers in Dendrochronology Award, and the 2005 CHGEOL Award.
