Prof. Markus Schwaiger is a Professor in the Nuclear Medical Clinic and Policlinic at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), affiliated with the TUM School of Medicine. He served as Medical Director and CEO of the Klinikum rechts der Isar from 2016 to 2021 and previously led the Department of Nuclear Medicine from 1993 to 2017. His research focuses on multimodal imaging in cardiology and oncology, particularly advancing PET as a standard for myocardial viability assessment and tumor biology imaging.
Education: Completed medical studies at the University of Freiburg and Freie Universität Berlin. Held professorships at UCLA School of Medicine and University of Michigan before returning to TUM in 1993.
Research Interests: Development of PET-based theranostics, tumor biology imaging, and integrative approaches for precision medicine. Leads the Collaborative Research Center 824 (CRC 824), which targets tumor biology imaging and therapy monitoring. Founded TranslaTUM, TUM’s interdisciplinary translational cancer research institute.
Awards: Recipient of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Medal (2019), Georg-von-Hevesy Medal (2016), and Federal Cross of Merit (2009). Became President of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 2023.
Grants/Labs: Directs CRC 824 and oversees TranslaTUM. His work includes collaborations with institutions like the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK). Research involves radiotheranostics, CAR T cell tracking, and PSMA-targeted therapies.
