Markus Schwaiger

Markus Schwaiger is a leading academic physician and researcher, currently serving as President of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (2023-present). He previously held pivotal roles including Medical Director/CEO of Klinikum rechts der Isar (2016-2021), Founding Director of TranslaTUM at Technical University of Munich (TUM), and Director of Nuclear Medicine at TUM (1993-2017). He maintains an adjunct professorship at the University of Michigan (1993-2018) and has held deanship positions at TUM's School of Medicine.

His education includes an M.D. from Free University of Berlin (1977), with postdoctoral training at UC Cincinnati and UCLA specializing in cardiology and nuclear medicine.

Research focuses on molecular imaging, multimodal imaging, oncology, and cardiology. His work pioneers novel diagnostic techniques for cancer and cardiovascular diseases, particularly through PET/CT and hybrid imaging technologies.
