Markus Hilander is a University Lecturer in Environmental Education at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki, and holds the title of Docent in Geography Education at the University of Eastern Finland. His primary roles include teaching environmental education to early childhood teacher students and geography education to primary and subject teacher students. He is affiliated with the Department of Education and the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS).

His research focuses on visual methodologies in geography education, interpretation of photographs from a geographical perspective, and urban environmental education. Key themes include the analysis of textbook visuals, climate education in early childhood settings, and the role of meaningful encounters with built environments in fostering environmental awareness.
He has contributed over 80 peer-reviewed publications since 2011, with recent work emphasizing visual learning strategies and environmental pedagogy. Notable projects include the KETTU research project (2020–2024), which explores sustainable futures in early childhood education.
Dr. Hilander serves as a member of the editorial board for the Natura journal and actively participates in peer reviews for multiple academic journals, including Education Sciences and Journal of Research and Didactics in Geography.
