Markus Frank holds key appointments as Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Dermatology at Harvard Medical School, Associate Physician of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and member of the Stem Cell Program at Boston Children's Hospital. He also co-leads the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) Skin Program.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor’s in Biochemical Sciences, Harvard College
- M.D., University of Heidelberg School of Medicine, Germany
- Internal Medicine Residency, Albert Einstein College of Medicine
- Nephrology Fellowship, Brigham and Women's Hospital
- Transplant Immunology Research Training, Brigham and Women's and Boston Children's Hospitals
Dr. Frank's laboratory pioneers research on the ABCB5 transporter in cancer stem cell biology. Critical discoveries demonstrate ABCB5's role in melanoma drug resistance, tumor initiation, and immunotherapy evasion. His team proved ABCB5-positive melanoma-initiating cells (MMICs) drive tumorigenesis and that targeting ABCB5 sensitizes tumors to chemotherapy while inhibiting growth. Current work explores ABCB5 as a clinical biomarker and therapeutic target across malignancies.
His translational research extends to vision restoration through skin cell reprogramming for corneal regeneration, now in clinical trials.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Elected Member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI)
Dr. Frank directs a laboratory at Boston Children's Hospital (Enders Research Building, Room 507), leading collaborative research across Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the HSCI Skin Program to develop novel cancer stem cell-targeted therapies.
