Marko Mirč

Dr. Marko Mirč is a Researcher at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković", a National Institute of the Republic of Serbia affiliated with the University of Belgrade.

He completed his undergraduate and master's studies in ecology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad, and obtained his doctoral degree in ecological sciences at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. His doctoral thesis focused on "Characterization of the ecological and conservation status of the Common Wall Lizard (Podarcis muralis) in Vojvodina, Serbia," for which he received the "Akademik Milutin Radovanović" award.

Dr. Mirč's research spans multiple ecological domains including:

• Evolutionary and adaptation mechanisms in amphibians and reptiles
• Responses to anthropogenic environmental changes (urbanization, habitat destruction, pollution, climate change)
• Environmental modeling and conservation of small wetland ecosystems
• Citizen science applications in environmental protection
• Urban ecology and wildlife adaptation

He currently leads the "Assessing Quality and Understanding Abundant Biodiversity of Urban Wetlands of Three Cities in Serbia (CSI:AQUA)" project (2025-2027), which aims to transform community members from passive observers to active stewards of urban wetlands through education and hands-on monitoring.

Dr. Mirč is an active member of the European Society of Herpetologists (Societas Europaea Herpetologica) and regularly participates in science popularization programs including the "Noć Istraživača" (European Researchers' Night) and the "Festival nauke" (Science Festival), where he engages the public through educational biology workshops.
