Marko Kölbl is an Assistant Professor and head of the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, holding a PhD in Ethnomusicology with active research and teaching responsibilities.
His research centers on intersectional, queer-feminist, and postcolonial perspectives in music, with core interests spanning music and racism, gender and sexuality in music, migration and music, postcolonial music studies, and folk music research. He extensively explores death and mourning rituals, vocal practices, dance traditions, and racialization processes within minority communities.
Kölbl chairs the ICTMD Study Group on Music, Gender and Sexuality (www.ictmusic.org/music-and-gender), leading international scholarly initiatives. His ongoing fieldwork engages with the Croatian minority in Burgenland, Afghan migrant communities in Vienna, and regions including Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, and Turkey. He teaches both academic and artistic courses, notably the Global Conservatoire course "Music and Racism".
