Marko Elovainio is a Professor at the University of Helsinki's Department of Psychology and Logopedics, within the Faculty of Medicine Medicum. His research focuses on psychosocial factors influencing health, including mental disorders, work environments, and social inequalities. He leads projects on child and adolescent mental health, healthcare utilization patterns, and the impact of environmental factors like temperature on mental health outcomes.
Key research interests include the interplay between socioeconomic status, mental health, and family dynamics, with a strong emphasis on register-based nationwide cohort studies. He has contributed to understanding the epidemiology of mental disorders, workplace interventions for health promotion, and the consequences of developmental disorders in internationally adopted children.
Recent work highlights associations between childhood mental health and parental employment, the role of peer networks in academic dropout risks, and the effectiveness of primary healthcare collaboration. His projects are funded by institutions like the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and involve collaborations across multiple Nordic countries.
Elovainio serves as a supervisor for doctoral programs in Human Behaviour, Clinical Research, and Population Health. His research emphasizes translational outcomes, aiming to inform public health policies and improve healthcare systems.
