Kaisla Komulainen is a University Researcher and Docent at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Medicine. Her work focuses on psychosocial factors and health, particularly within the SLEEPWELL Research Program. She leads and participates in research projects such as Sosiaalisen tuen yhteys monisairastavuuteen (2025–2029) and Spread and spillover effects of mental disorders in social networks (2023–2027), funded by the Academy of Finland and other institutions. Her research integrates epidemiology, mental health, and social network analysis to understand the interplay between psychosocial environments, mental disorders, and public health outcomes.
Key research interests include childhood mental health determinants, intergenerational mental health transmission, and the impact of socioeconomic factors on health behaviors. She has published extensively on topics like residential temperature effects on mental disorders, peer network spillover effects on school dropout, and longitudinal analyses of mental disorder incidence. Her work frequently uses register-based cohort studies and network analysis methodologies.
Komulainen has collaborated internationally, including with Danish and UK institutions, and her studies often involve large-scale data from Finland's comprehensive healthcare registries. She has contributed to policy-relevant research on mental health service utilization, loneliness in aging populations, and environmental exposures affecting cognitive function. Beyond research, she holds project management roles in grants totaling over €3M, emphasizing translational public health interventions.
