Mark X Cicero is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Emergency Medicine) at Yale University School of Medicine, where he serves as Director of Pediatric Disaster Preparedness and Principal Investigator of the Pediatric Research in Disaster Education (PRIDE) program. He holds dual appointments in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine departments, reflecting his interdisciplinary expertise in pediatric emergency care and disaster response.
- Professor of Pediatrics (Emergency Medicine)
- Director, Pediatric Disaster Preparedness
- Principal Investigator, Pediatric Research in Disaster Education (PRIDE)
- Chair, Pediatrics Committee of the National Association of EMS Physicians

Dr. Cicero completed his medical education at State University of New York at Buffalo (MD, 2001), followed by pediatrics residency and chief residency at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, and a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine.
His research focuses on pediatric disaster medicine, with particular emphasis on improving children's care during disasters through innovative educational strategies and triage systems. Dr. Cicero has designed experiential and didactic curricula in pediatric disaster medicine and has published extensively on disaster medicine educational strategies. His work addresses critical gaps in pediatric emergency preparedness, recognizing that small and large scale disasters over the last 20 years—including disease outbreaks, terrorist attacks, and gun violence—have revealed significant shortcomings in caring for children during emergencies.
Analysis of his recent publications shows a consistent focus on pediatric disaster response systems, triage methodologies, and simulation-based training. His work spans from tabletop exercises to large-scale simulations, with particular attention to translating research into practical tools for emergency responders. The evolution of his research demonstrates increasing sophistication in simulation methodologies and growing recognition of the unique needs of children in disaster scenarios.
- National Award from National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (2022)
- Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP)
Dr. Cicero's research is sponsored by Emergency Medical Services for Children and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. He has served nationally as a consultant for prehospital and hospital pediatric disaster preparedness. His firsthand disaster experience includes responding to hurricane Isabel in Norfolk VA and managing an epidemic. He has led Connecticut-wide disaster drills, including a tabletop school bus rollover simulation that promoted a novel hospital disaster readiness checklist.
As Director of Pediatric Disaster Preparedness, Dr. Cicero leads initiatives to build resilience for pediatric disaster survivors and has developed PRIDE Pediatric Disaster Triage Training. His work bridges clinical emergency medicine with large-scale disaster response planning, ensuring that children's unique physiological and psychological needs are addressed in emergency protocols.
