Mark Wills is a Professor and Director of Research at the University of Cambridge, based at the Department of Medicine and Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology & Infectious Disease (CITIID). He leads an active research group focused on understanding immune responses to persistent viruses and mechanisms of immune evasion.
His primary research interests include:
- Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) specific CD4/CD8 T-cell and natural killer cell responses
- Mechanisms of immune evasion during viral latency and reactivation
- Control of HCMV in immunosuppressed transplant patients
- Ageing immune system and its impact on persistent viral infections
- Immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination
- Immune dysregulation in Long COVID
Mark serves as the Department's Biological Safety Officer and chairs the University's Biological Safety sub-committee. He is an active member of the Immunology and Infectious Disease (ImID) Principal Investigators group.
- Editorial Board Member, Journal of General Virology
- Member, Microbiology Society
- Member, British Society of Immunology
His research is funded by the Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust, and an industrial collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline. Mark maintains collaborative projects across immunology and virology research domains, with particular focus on translating basic immune mechanisms into clinical applications for viral diseases.
