Craig J Bierle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Minnesota Medical School, with affiliations in the Institute for Molecular Virology and the Center for Immunology. He is actively conducting research on human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), focusing on congenital and perinatal infections, placental transmission, and host immune responses.
His research interests include:
- Human cytomegalovirus pathogenesis
- Transplacental viral transmission
- Trophoblast biology and placental immunity
- Guinea pig models of CMV
- Host restriction factors like APOBEC3 proteins
- Immune evasion mechanisms of herpesviruses
Recent publications highlight his work on CD4+ T cell protection in CMV infection, the use of ddPCR in newborn CMV screening, restriction of HCMV by trophoblast stem cells, and viral manipulation of APOBEC3B. These studies reflect a strong focus on understanding congenital CMV and developing strategies for prevention and intervention.
His scientific contributions are supported by multiple NIH-funded grants, including leadership roles in projects such as Trophoblast development and placental susceptibility to cytomegalovirus infection and the Congenital and Perinatal Infections Rare Diseases Clinical Research Consortium. He collaborates with key researchers including Mark R. Schleiss, Megan D. Gearhart, and Nicholas Schuldt.
Bierle is accepting PhD students and continues to advance understanding of maternal-fetal immunity and viral pathogenesis. His lab contributes significantly to global health efforts related to congenital infections and aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals in health and well-being.
