Professor Mark Wilcox is a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Sir Edward Brotherton Chair of Bacteriology at the University of Leeds. He serves as the Head of Microbiology Research & Development and Infection Lead of the Leeds NIHR Diagnostic Technologies Co-operative at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He holds national roles as NHS England’s National Clinical Director for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), and as Public Health England’s lead for Clostridium difficile infection. His expertise spans healthcare-associated infections, antibiotic resistance, diagnostics, and clinical trials of new antimicrobial agents.
He chairs PHE’s Rapid Review Panel and sits on multiple national and international committees, including the MRC Infections and Immunity Board and the UK DHSC’s Technical Validation Group for COVID-19 tests. He leads a multidisciplinary research group focusing on C. difficile infection, gut microbiome, and antimicrobial development, with over 560 publications and contributions to major textbooks like Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.
His professional qualifications include B Med Sci, BM, BS, MD, and FRCPath. He advises regulatory bodies like FDA/EMA and chairs editorial boards for journals such as Clinical Infectious Diseases. Current research opportunities exist in his group for PhD students interested in infection-related topics.
