Mark Gilchrist is a Professor of Practice at Imperial College London, affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine's Department of Infectious Disease. He leads the NHS Theme for precision prescribing within the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance. His roles include directing antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and leading the outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) service. He is a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and chairs its antimicrobial advisory group.
His research focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), infectious disease pharmacology, and public health interventions. Recent work includes studies on scarlet fever transmission dynamics, carbapenem-resistant pathogens, and genomic analysis of Group B Streptococcal outbreaks. He has contributed to national antibiotic stewardship policies and evaluated interventions in primary care. His work integrates clinical practice, molecular epidemiology, and healthcare systems research.
Key achievements include the development of rapid diagnostic tools for SARS-CoV-2 and leadership in multinational studies on surgical infection management in low-resource settings. He collaborates with UK Health Security Agency, NHS Trusts, and academic partners to address AMR and HCAI challenges.
